In 1985, there were only two nines at Walnut Creek, the Willow and the Pecan, with Country Club Drive separating the two. Tom Rogala of the Pecan and Mike Tierney of the Willow each felt that their nine had the better players, so they agreed on a tournament to settle the issue. They decided to make it a charitable event and to give the proceeds to a needy person in Mansfield.

The contest started out small, but expanded to include the three nines when the Oak course opened in 1992. With the cooperation of the Club and Pro Shop, this tournament has been played for over thirty years.

Since its inception, the Battle of the Nines Charity has contributed over $600,000 to various Mansfield organizations and families in need.
